Bouncy™ Hardy Hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata ‘Bokomabou’ USPPAF, CPBRAF) delivers large, 12–15 inch cone-shaped blooms on stems that stay upright through storms. Flowers open a clean, true white in midsummer, then take on soft rose tones as nights cool toward fall. The dark red stems add contrast and strength, giving the shrub structure even before it flowers. Reaching about 4 to 5 feet tall and wide, it fills space without overwhelming a foundation bed. In our landscape trials, we’ve found it to be one of the most reliable panicle hydrangeas for holding its flower heads high after heavy rain.
This selection belongs to the hardy paniculata group, known for flowering on new growth and performing well in cold climates. The rounded habit stays full from base to tip, and the foliage remains clean and dark green through the growing season. It is deciduous, heat tolerant, and well suited to Zones 3 through 8. Pollinators visit the blooms during peak summer. Use Bouncy™ in mixed shrub borders, as a flowering hedge, in cutting gardens, or as a focal point in small urban landscapes. It also adapts well to large patio containers where strong stems are essential.
Bouncy™ Hardy Hydrangea Care
Plant in full sun for maximum bloom production; light afternoon shade is helpful in hotter regions. Choose well-drained soil with moderate fertility. Hydrangea paniculata tolerates a wide pH range, but performs best in slightly acidic to neutral soil between 5.5 and 7.0. Keep soil consistently moist, especially during the first growing season and in extended dry periods. Apply a balanced, granular fertilizer in early spring as buds begin to swell.
Because it blooms on new wood, prune Bouncy™ in late winter or very early spring before growth starts. Cut stems back by about one-third to promote sturdy branching and larger panicles. Remove weak or crowded growth to improve air circulation. In colder climates, a winter mulch layer helps protect the root system during freeze-thaw cycles.
Bouncy™ Hardy Hydrangea Spacing
Allow about 4 feet between plants when planting a hedge or mass display. This spacing gives each shrub room to mature into its natural rounded form. For containers, use a pot at least 20 inches wide with quality drainage. Pair it with low-growing companions such as compact ornamental grasses, trailing calibrachoa, or silver-leaved annuals that highlight the white blooms and red stems without competing for space.
