Growing Zones
Bonfire Patio Peach pulls double duty, with deep burgundy leaves and spring pink double blossoms on a tree that stays about 4–6 feet tall and 4–6 feet wide. It also sets yellow peaches blushed red that shine in pies, jams, and canning once the heat brings up the sweetness. Even though compact, Prunus persica ‘Bonfire’ gives you ornamental color and a real harvest without committing to the footprint of a standard peach tree. We’ve found it’s the perfect size for mid-summer fruit on a patio.
Bonfire Patio Peach Care
Plant Bonfire Patio Peach in early spring after the worst freezes pass, or in fall where winters are mild. Set the root flare level with the surrounding soil. Give it full sun (6–8+ hours) and well-drained loam or sandy loam with a slightly acidic to neutral pH around 6.0–7.0. Prune while dormant in late winter to open the canopy.
Growing Bonfire Patio Peach
Bonfire Patio Peach needs roughly 400 chill hours to flower and fruit well. Harvest typically lands in mid-summer, often around July, with fruit usually ripening about 90–110 days after bloom depending on your heat and sun. Space plants about 5–6 feet apart even when grown small, because good airflow helps reduce common peach issues like leaf curl and scab. Thin developing fruit to improve size and reduce branch strain.
Growing Bonfire Patio Peach in Containers
Use a pot that’s at least 18–24 inches wide (roughly 15–25 gallons) with multiple drainage holes, and a fast-draining potting mix that doesn’t stay soggy. Repot every 2–3 years to refresh the mix and step up to the next size if roots are circling. Keep Bonfire Patio Peach as a thriller centerpiece surrounded by basil plants and oregano for a useful edible mix, plus marigolds to fill in at the rim. In the landscape, pair it with irises and balloon flower for spring-to-summer blooms that won’t crowd the trunk.
Watering Bonfire Patio Peach
Water deeply when the top couple inches of soil dry out, and expect to water more often during flowering and fruit fill, especially in containers. Leaves that turn yellow and soft can point to soggy roots, while dull, curling foliage often shows it’s time to water.
Feeding Bonfire Patio Peach
Feed Bonfire Patio Peach in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer, and follow with a lighter mid-summer application if growth is pale or fruiting is heavy. Avoid high nitrogen late in the season, and you’ll get steadier flowering and better fruit development going into next year.
