The Blue Star Juniper Tree Form (Juniperus squamata 'Blue Star') is a dwarf evergreen conifer grafted onto a upright standard to create a striking lollipop-shaped topiary. Its dense, spreading canopy of sharp, silver-blue needles sits on a clean single stem, delivering year-round color and a sculptural look that stands out in any landscape. In the tree form, this plant reaches approximately 6 feet tall with a canopy spread of about 2 to 3 feet. It is an excellent choice for patio containers, entryway plantings, and garden accent spots where a neat, formal look is desired.
Blue Star Juniper Tree Form is a slow grower, adding only 2 to 4 inches per year, which keeps it manageable and tidy with minimal effort. Its silvery-blue foliage holds its color through all four seasons, making it a reliable source of year-round interest. This plant is deer resistant, drought tolerant once established, and highly adaptable to urban conditions including pollution and salt exposure. It attracts birds and performs well in both container and in-ground settings.
Blue Star Juniper Tree Form Care
Plant your Blue Star Juniper Tree Form in spring or fall in a location that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. It performs well in a wide range of well-drained soils, including sandy or poor soils, but will not tolerate soggy or waterlogged conditions. Neutral to slightly acidic soil is preferred. Add a 1 to 2 inch layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture and protect roots.
Water your new tree deeply a couple of times per week during the first growing season to help establish the root system; once established, water only during extended dry periods. Apply a slow-release fertilizer at planting time and again each spring before new growth begins. Pruning needs are minimal since the natural form is clean and attractive on its own. If you want to maintain a tighter topiary shape, prune lightly in late winter to early spring before new growth emerges, and avoid pruning during extreme heat or cold.
Blue Star Juniper Tree Form Spacing
Plant Blue Star Juniper Tree Forms 3 to 4 feet apart to allow adequate airflow and room for the canopy to develop its full, rounded shape. This tree form is well suited to containers on a patio or flanking the entryway. If planting in a container, choose a pot at least twice the width of the root ball with adequate drainage holes. Keep it clear of areas with poor drainage, and ensure the support stem is not damaged when planting, as the graft union is essential to the tree's structure and health.
