Bing Cherry Tree is known for heavy crops of large, heart-shaped cherries with firm, meaty, purplish-red flesh when fully ripe. The tree forms a rounded canopy and typically reaches about 12–15 feet tall and 10–15 feet wide, with early-spring clusters of fragrant white blooms. It offers benchmark sweet-cherry flavor and high yields, but Bing needs a compatible partner nearby for reliable fruit set. We recommend Bing when you want classic fresh-eating cherries and don't mind planting a pollinizer.

Bing Cherry Care

Plant in early spring or fall in full sun and sandy, well-drained soil, aiming for a soil pH around 6.0–7.0. Space trees about 10–15 feet apart to keep canopies from tangling and to improve airflow. Prune in late winter to encourage strong, more horizontal scaffold branches and remove dead or diseased wood.

Growing Bing Cherry

Bing commonly begins bearing in about 5–6 years as a standard tree, with harvest often landing mid-June to mid-summer depending on climate. Because this variety requires cross-pollination, plant a compatible cherry within about 100 feet for reliable fruit set; sweet-cherry partners like Black Tartarian and Lapins are common pollinizers. Plan to net as fruit colors, because birds will quickly find ripening fruit.

Growing Bing Cherry in Containers

Container growing only makes sense short term. Start with a 20–25 gallon pot with excellent drainage and a quality potting mix. Repot in 2–3 years and eventually relocate the tree to the ground. For container companions, use thyme and pansies to dress the surface without shading the trunk. For nearby landscape companions, try lavender and bee balm to bring pollinators during bloom time.

Watering Bing Cherry

Water deeply during the first season. Once established, soak when the top few inches of soil dry, especially during heat and while fruit is sizing. Dry soil can lead to small, stressed fruit, while constantly wet soil is where cherries start to struggle.

Feeding Bing Cherry

Feed in early spring with a balanced fertilizer. Follow with a lighter mid-summer application if growth is weak. Keep fertilizer 6–8 inches away from the trunk, and avoid heavy nitrogen late in the season so new growth has time to harden before winter.
