Baby Pete™ Agapanthus stays neat and low while throwing full, blue flower clusters weeks earlier than most agapanthus. The blooms rise just above a fountain of short, wide, strap-like green leaves, so the whole plant looks dense. Botanically known as Agapanthus praecox subsp. orientalis, this compact evergreen was selected for a longer bloom window because it rarely sets seed pods. Our favorite use is along a path edge where the plant will stay tidy and you can enjoy the flowers up close.
This variety is best suited to zones 8–11 in the ground and should be treated as a patio plant that comes indoors for winter in zones 7 and colder. It has a clumping habit and moderate growth rate, and once roots are established it handles mild drought better than many summer bloomers. The flower heads are good for cutting and drawing pollinators and hummingbirds when they’re in full swing. Place it poolside, in repeated groupings at the front of a sunny border, or as the upright “thriller” in mixed containers.
Baby Pete™ Agapanthus Care
Give Baby Pete™ Agapanthus full sun to partial sun, with the best flowering in stronger light. Plant in average, well-drained soil and avoid spots that stay wet after rain. Soil pH can run slightly acidic to neutral, roughly 6.0–7.0.
Water deeply when the top 3 inches of soil are dry, making sure moisture reaches the full root ball. A balanced fertilizer in early spring supports fresh growth, and a second feeding after flowering helps the plant recharge. In cooler weather it may slow down and hold foliage, but hard freezes can damage crowns if left outdoors in zone 7.
Remove spent flower stems down at the base to keep the clump tidy and to extend flowering. In early spring, trim away any winter-worn leaves before new growth starts. For zone 7 and below, overwinter containers in a bright, frost-free spot and keep soil barely damp.
Baby Pete™ Agapanthus Spacing
Space plants 18–24 inches apart in the landscape so each clump can widen without crowding. In containers, one plant fits well in a 12–14 inch pot, while a 16–18 inch bowl can hold three for a fuller ring of blooms.
For landscape pairings in warm zones, combine it with dianthus for a low edging, yarrow for summer bloom continuity, and roses nearby for height and structure. In containers, pair it with petunias for color around the rim and purslane for a heat-friendly spill that won’t shade the crown.
